July 25 marks National Hire a Veteran Day—a time to recognize the unparalleled value Veterans bring to the civilian workforce and to recommit ourselves to opening doors of opportunity for those who have served. Marine Corps Veteran and Hire Our Heroes founder Dan Caporale created National Hire a Veteran Day in 2017 as a call to action for hiring companies, and as well as to motivate Veterans to apply.
At the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this day carries special meaning as a chance to honor Veterans through hiring. If you’re a Veteran looking for a career that allows you to continue your mission of service, consider VA. And if you’re a company looking for dedicated employees who can transfer skills across tasks, consider a Veteran.
Skills on a Mission
Veterans embody the traits every organization seeks: discipline, leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and a deep commitment to mission. Nearly one-third of VA’s workforce is comprised of Veterans, and their unique insights strengthen our ability to provide world-class care and support to those who’ve served. Veterans’ Preference
Even when it’s not Hire a Veteran Day, Veterans who are disabled or who served on active duty in the Armed Forces during certain specified time periods or in military campaigns are entitled to preference in hiring for many Federal government jobs. This law is called Veterans’ Preference. While Veterans’ Preference does not guarantee a job, it provides a uniform way for companies to offer special consideration for qualified candidates who are Veterans.
