Turning Resume Gaps into Opportunities

A VA employee reviews a resume.

Nearly everyone experiences gaps in their career history, whether due to raising a family, going back to school, managing health challenges, or simply taking time to reassess goals. While these gaps may feel daunting when applying for new opportunities, they don’t have to hold you back. With the right approach, you can frame them as part of your professional journey.

Be Honest, But Keep It Brief

Recruiters and hiring managers understand that life happens. Instead of trying to hide or gloss over employment gaps in an application, acknowledge them honestly and concisely. A short line like “Took time off to care for family” or “Pursued professional development” is often all that’s needed. You can elaborate later in an interview if need be.

Highlight What You Gained

Time away from traditional employment can build valuable skills. Did you volunteer, freelance, take a certification course, or sharpen your leadership abilities in another setting? Emphasize transferable skills—such as communication, organization, or project management—that you developed during your time away.

Prepare Your Narrative

When it comes up in an interview, be ready with a confident and forward-looking response. Keep it simple: explain the reason for the gap, then pivot to how the experience prepared you for this next step. For example: “I took time to complete additional training in [field], which has equipped me with the skills to contribute immediately in this role.”

Focus on the Present and Future

Employers are most interested in what you can bring to their organization today. Direct their attention to your recent accomplishments, relevant skills, and enthusiasm for the role. By framing your gap as part of a larger story of growth and resilience, you’ll demonstrate confidence and readiness.
