VA’s pledge to support Veterans through federal employment

November is a special time to honor and celebrate the service of all who have worn the uniform. As an expression of deep gratitude for service members and their sacrifices, VA provides career readiness and federal employment resources, pathways, and opportunities for Veterans, especially as they transition into and grow their civilian careers.

VA offers meaningful, mission-driven employment and holds a unique and respected position for the nation’s Veterans as an employer of choice. Over 25% of VA’s workforce consists of Veterans who continue to serve their country and peers through their federal careers.

As an employer of choice for Veterans, VA stands out because of the range of career pathways and advancement opportunities available. From health care to administration, human resources to law enforcement, engineering to information technology, VA careers empower Veterans to utilize their service-related and professional skills in civilian careers.

  • More than 12,000 Veteran employees have found their calling in nursing roles, which accounts for the highest concentration of Veteran employees at VA.
  • Another 11,000 Veterans work as Veterans Claims Examiners.
  • Nearly 7,000 Veterans work in custodial care.

VA offers stable, meaningful employment with competitive salaries and benefits that provide security for Veterans and their families.

Veteran applicants can leverage special hiring authorities to gain a competitive edge in VA’s hiring process. Currently, the use of these authorities has led to VA hiring over 5,000 Veteran employees. VA leverages Veteran hiring authorities to create pathways for Veterans, ensuring their skills and experiences are recognized and valued within mission-driven roles.

Each VA employee plays a critical role in improving the lives of Veterans and their families. This sense of purpose and fulfillment drives Veterans to achieve professional success with VA. By matching their skills with VA’s mission, Veterans can continue a legacy of service while creating stable and successful futures for themselves and their families.

Through the Veteran and Military Spouse Talent Engagement Program (VMSTEP), VA provides career readiness support and resources to Veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses.

VMSTEP is available to help navigate pathways to VA employment, develop competitive federal applications, and access VA career advancement and retention opportunities. VMSTEP is a vital link between military service and a fulfilling VA career, enabling Veterans to prepare for and find pathways to meaningful roles with VA.
