We get a lot of questions about the application and hiring process here at VA. We hear from folks just like you (and maybe even you!) through our social network communities on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X (Twitter), and while we do our best to answer those questions, sometimes it’s best to go right to the source.
We asked members of our physician-provider recruiter (PPR) team, who work in our Veterans Integrated Services Networks (VISNs) around the country, to share what they want applicants like you to know about applying to work at VA. Here’s what they told us.
Trust the process (and communicate)
“The application process is thorough and may require a significant time commitment. However, current employees, including myself, believe it’s worth it. The VA is committed to providing meaningful employment opportunities, and this process allows us to identify the best possible fit for both the role and VA.” — Candace Anderson, VISN 5
“Our onboarding process is unique and different than most. We have different guidelines and procedures than other health care facilities you may be used to. In turn, it may take our onboarding team a little bit longer to ensure all these requirements are met. Communication is key with your onboarding partners.” — Jeffrey D. Richter, VISN 15
“Do not hesitate to reach out to the HR point of contact. In every job announcement, there’s a section called ‘How to Apply.’ In that, there’s an ‘Agency Contact Information’ section that will have the email and phone number of the HR representative who handles that particular announcement. This HR representative will be the most knowledgeable about where the announcement is in the process.” — Amber Guinotte, VISN 19
Know your options
“USAJOBS.gov is not the only way to apply. Qualified applicants can connect with members of the NRS team or the PPR at their location of interest.” — Arriana Larmony, VISN 7
“There are many ways to apply at VA. Don’t stop at submitting your resume through USAJOBS.gov or another job posting. Also, our recruiters are connected and are willing to assist them in getting their resume to other recruiters that can help them get a job at another VA.” — Jeanne M. LaBarge, VISN 2
The mission matters
“By working at VA, you get to help America’s heroes on a daily basis! Work at VA
And here’s a piece of bonus advice from Hillary Garcia of VA’s National Recruitment Service: “Apply for a wide range of positions that include duties where you’d excel. There are plenty of upward mobility opportunities that allow you promotion potential and the ability to constantly grow and evolve. Have patience and follow up. You are your biggest advocate.”
