Below, we’ll visit Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Michigan, a site so special it was included in the National Register of Historic Places.
Oscar G. Johnson Medical Center
The Oscar G. Johnson Medical Center is located in Iron Mountain, Michigan and was born out of the increased need for Veteran health care as World War II came to a close. In 1945, Iron Mountain was officially selected as the site for the construction of a new hospital to serve Veterans in Michigan and Wisconsin.
In 1946, VA transferred the project to the management of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, who hired the Chicago firm of Fugard, Olsen, Urbain, and Neiler to design the facility, and Wallace G. Atkinson to design the grounds. The Iron Mountain VA Hospital was dedicated on March 5, 1950 and was renamed the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Center in 2007, after Dickinson County native and Medal of Honor recipient Oscar G. Johnson. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2022 and just celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2025.
Iron Mountain, Michigan
Iron Mountain is the county seat of Dickinson County, Michigan and was named for the valuable iron ore found in the vicinity. A true destination for outdoor recreation and scenic views, Iron Mountain is home to the Millie Hill bat cave, which is one of the largest bat breeding colonies in North America, the Chapin Mine Steam Pump Engine, and the Dickinson Trail Network, which boasts mountain biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing.
In 2006, Iron Mountain was also named a “Michigan Main Street” community by Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm.
