Honoring VA Medical Laboratory Professionals: The Unseen Heroes

Medical Laboratory Professionals Week

Medical laboratory professionals play a crucial role in ensuring Veterans receive accurate, timely, and life-saving diagnoses at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical facilities across the country. From conducting routine blood tests to identifying complex diseases, these experts deliver results that directly impact the care we provide to those who bravely served our nation.

VA proudly honors the skilled and dedicated individuals who serve behind the scenes in laboratories during Medical Laboratory Professionals Week (MLPW) and every day! To all our VA laboratory professionals—thank you for the essential role you play in serving Veterans. Your expertise saves lives, your service inspires us, and your work is deeply valued.

Happy Medical Laboratory Professionals Week!

MLPW History

Held annually during the last full week of April, MLPW is coordinated by a collaborative committee with representatives from 18 national clinical laboratory organizations, including founder American Society for Medical Technology, now called the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science. Since the development of this career group in the 1920s, medical laboratory science professionals remain steadfast as key members of the health care team who play a critical role in the diagnosis and prevention of disease.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are over 300,000 practitioners of clinical laboratory science in the United States, a statistic that is projected to grow!

The Mission of VA Laboratory Professionals

Whether working under the pressures of a public health crisis or quietly ensuring quality and accuracy in everyday testing, the contributions of medical laboratory professionals uphold the highest standards of Veteran care and VA’s core values.

These core values—integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence—define how everyone at VA fulfills our mission to care for Veterans. These five ideals describe our culture and serve as the foundation for the way we interact with both our Veterans and our fellow employees.

  • Integrity: We choose to act with the highest professional standards and maintain the trust of all with whom we engage.
  • Commitment: We work diligently to serve Veterans and are driven by an earnest belief in VA’s mission.
  • Advocacy: We are truly Veteran-centric, as we work to identify, consider, and advance the interests of Veterans.
  • Respect: We treat all those we serve and with whom we work with dignity and respect, because we believe you must show respect to earn it.
  • Excellence: We strive for the highest quality and value continuous improvement.
