More than 4 million Veterans return from active military careers to reside in rural communities. At VA, we work to meet these Veterans where they live, and promote opportunities to find happy homes in these rural communities around the country.
Like the Veterans you’ll serve, these rural communities are as diverse and exciting as you can imagine. You may find an opportunity to be closer to family and friends, or just enjoy a greater sense of privacy. Perhaps the lower cost of living or even the allure of open space appeals to you.
Today, we visit “wild and wonderful” West Virginia to explore the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg.
Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center
The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center is located on a 16-acre site adjacent to the Veterans Memorial Park and the West Virginia State Nursing Home in the city of Clarksburg, West Virginia.
The facility is named after Louis A. Johnson, who practiced law in Clarksburg before serving in World War I. He was appointed Secretary of Defense by President Harry S. Truman in 1949, and later helped found the American Legion.
The Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center was initially dedicated on Dec. 7, 1950, and was enhanced with the clinical addition in 1989. It has been an active teaching facility since 1960, participating in residency and academic affiliations with West Virginia University, Fairmont State University, Alderson-Broaddus College, and other nearby institutions of higher education.
In addition to providing exceptional Veteran care, the facility is dedicated to research, developing VA scientists and health care leaders as they create innovations that advance health care for Veterans and the nation. Major research areas include cardiology, colorectal cancer, depression, women’s health, and pulmonology.
Clarksburg, West Virginia
Clarksburg was named for General George Rogers Clark and incorporated in 1785. During the Civil War, it served as a supply depot of the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. General George B. McClellan had his headquarters here in 1861 until the Battle of Bull Run.
Clarksburg is the county seat of Harrison County, and provides a rich mix of retail, industrial, professional, and governmental services.
The city also offers many well-preserved, century-old buildings to explore across 3 sections of town: the downtown commercial district of West Main Street and West Pike Street, the Quality Hill residential district of East Main Street and the railroad district of Glen Elk on the north side.
With a growing local arts community, visitors can regularly enjoy concerts, performances, and movie nights throughout the city, while those with an interest in the outdoors can explore hiking trails, play a round of golf, or spend a summer day relaxing by the water and in the sun.
Clarksburg is a cultural center of the region and hosts many events and festivals, including the West Virginia Italian Heritage and West Virginia Black Heritage festivals.
