Rural Community Profile: Dublin, Georgia

More than 4 million Veterans return from active military careers to reside in rural communities. At VA, we work to meet these Veterans where they live, and promote the opportunities to find happy homes in these rural communities around the country for professionals like you.

Like the Veterans you’ll serve, these rural communities are as diverse and exciting as you can imagine. You may find an opportunity to be closer to family and friends, or just enjoy a greater sense of privacy. Perhaps the lower cost of living or even the allure of open space appeals to you.

Today, we explore a gem of the Peach State by visiting the Dublin VA Health Care System and the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center of Dublin, Georgia.

Carl Vinson VA Medical Center

Central to the Dublin VA Health Care System is the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center, which provides primary care and specialty health services. These include mental health services, women’s health care, physical therapy and rehabilitation, nutrition counseling, treatment for hearing loss, and more.

The facility was built by the U.S. Navy during World War II to care for wounded sailors, and later, served as a center for research into rheumatic fever. The Dublin Naval Hospital not only provided a place to convalesce, but also presented researchers with a place to study the disease, and to produce advancements in treatment.

The original campus featured a central hospital and administration building, surrounded by 8 ward buildings that were connected by corridors. Support facilities such as a boiler plant and personnel quarters were located to the sides and rear of the main hospital block.

The Navy allocated funds for Colonial Revival detailing to blend aesthetically with the surrounding Georgia architecture. I

Dublin, Georgia

The beginnings of Dublin’s history came as settlers started to establish a small trading post along the banks of the Oconee River. These early pioneers recognized the potential of the area, with its fertile lands and strategic location, and over the years, Dublin grew steadily.

As more settlers arrived, attracted by the opportunities for agriculture and trade, the community began to flourish. The town was officially incorporated in 1812, taking its name from the city of Dublin in Ireland, as a tribute to the Irish heritage of its early residents.

Today, the city stands as a testament to its rich history while embracing modern progress. In October 2019, Dublin was named a Georgia’s Exceptional Main Street (GEMS) community, which represents some of the best of the best Main Street Programs that the state has to offer.

Throughout Dublin, you’ll find friendly faces, warm welcomes, and a strong sense of community. Whether you’re exploring the historic sites, enjoying local events, or savoring the flavors of Southern cuisine, you’ll quickly discover all that Dublin has to offer.
