Every June, we observe Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Awareness Month as a time to elevate understanding, reduce stigma, and recognize the strength of those living with posttraumatic stress disorder. At the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), this month carries special meaning, as we serve the needs of Veterans who may carry the invisible wounds of service long after they return home.
PTSD is complex, but healing is possible—and VA mental health care professionals are on the front lines of that healing every day. If providing mental health care in a career that’s All About Veterans sounds like a good fit for you, consider VA.
Mental Health Care at VA
While VA is the world’s leading research and educational center of excellence on PTSD and traumatic stress, Veterans can receive treatment in a wide variety of other areas like anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. From psychologists and psychiatrists to licensed clinical social workers, counselors, and peer specialists, VA’s mission-critical mental health care teams deliver compassionate, evidence-based care in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Additionally, VA offers convenient telehealth appointments as well as mental health care apps to help Veterans practice mindfulness, anger management skills, and more.
Rewarding Work
“It is an honor to work with these folks who have been through so much, and all they want is to get their life back,” said Dr. Jonathan Farrell-Higgins, Clinical Psychologist at VA. Mental health care providers at VA have the opportunity to form meaningful connections with patients, contribute to innovative research and treatment approaches, and help Veterans reclaim their sense of stability, purpose, and hope. You’ll also benefit from a collaborative care environment, continued training opportunities, and generous Federal benefits that support your well-being as you support others.
