When someone chooses to serve our country, their family serves with them, and no one knows that better than military spouses.
As a military spouse, you have a distinct perspective on what it means to care for Veterans. You’re educated, qualified, and ready to serve families who have lived through experiences similar to your own. That’s knowledge other candidates just can’t duplicate.
The choice to come to VA is a great transition for military spouses: you understand our mission, and we understand the challenges you face in finding work that accommodates the fluctuations that accompany military service. Your unique experience makes you a perfect match for a job at VA.
The VA commitment
At VA, we know you have what it takes, but maybe you just need a little help finding the right fit for you. That’s why we have programs and resources available to help you find a place on our team.
The Veteran and Military Spouse Talent Engagement Program (VMSTEP) provides employment readiness assistance and support while advocating the use of special hiring authorities, employment programs, and retention strategies to position VA as the employer of choice for Veterans and military spouses.
VA also became the first federal agency to sign the 4+1 Commitment, a voluntary pledge by employers to adopt important employment policies designed to expand employment and career opportunities for military spouses.
To further find the best opportunities for military spouses, we’ve partnered with the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) program. MSEP creates employment connections for military spouses seeking career opportunities and provides spouses like you with direct access to employers like VA who are actively recruiting.
Another partnership exists with the Department of Defense’s Spouse Education and Career Opportunities (SECO) program, which provides education and career guidance to military spouses worldwide. SECO offers comprehensive resources and tools related to career exploration, education, training and licensing, employment readiness, and career connections.
Start your job search
In addition to providing valuable resources and partnerships, we’re doing everything we can to make your job search easier. We tag VA openings ideal for military spouses on USAJOBS.gov, and highlight key information—remote work opportunities, flexible work schedules, child care, and health benefits—in our job announcements.
As you begin your search, you can verify that jobs are geared towards military spouses by looking in the “This job is open to…” section. When a job is open to military spouses, you’ll see an icon that looks like two interlocking white circles on a green circle.
If you want to narrow your options down, you can also filter your initial search. On USAJOBS.gov, you can find filters:
- In the “Top Filters” tab on the right of the screen on desktop
- In the “Filter” option at the bottom of the screen on a mobile device
Select the “military spouse” filter and you’ll see jobs open to military spouses. These jobs may be open to other qualifying candidate groups, as well, but your qualifications will make you an ideal candidate.
Depending on your background and skill set, you may be qualified for other positions, too, so don’t hesitate to do additional searches beyond the “military spouse” filter. Just like your spouse, you’re a unique individual with your own talents and training, and there may be more opportunities out there that better suit your needs.
