Staying Positive During Your Job Search

Searching for a new job can be a journey filled with ups and downs, from spending long hours browsing job openings to anxiously awaiting a response after an interview.

At the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), we understand the challenges that come with job hunting and are here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’re pursuing a career in nursing, oncology, or pharmacy, maintaining a positive mindset can make all the difference. Below are some tactics you can implement to help you remain positive as you search for a new career.

1. Remember Your “Why”

Working for VA isn’t just a job—it’s a mission. At VA, we’re all about Veterans; every role supports the health and well-being of those who so bravely served. Keeping that sense of purpose front and center can help you stay inspired, especially during slower parts of your search.

2. Celebrate Small Wins

Job searching involves many steps: updating your resume, submitting an application, preparing for interviews, and more. Each of those is a victory! Recognize the progress you’re making, even if you haven’t received an offer yet.

3. Tap into VA Resources

VA offers a wide range of career tools and resources—use them! Connect with a recruiter and review career guidance tailored to your unique needs as an applicant.

4. Lean on Your Network

Whether it’s former colleagues, mentors, or friends, staying connected with people who support your goals can lift your spirits and open doors. LinkedIn is a great place to start, plus members of the military community are eligible for a year of LinkedIn Premium for free.

5. Stay Routine-Oriented

Create a structured routine that includes time for job searching, physical activity, and rest. A balanced day keeps burnout at bay and helps maintain mental clarity and motivation.

6. Focus on What You Can Control

You can’t predict when a recruiter will respond or how many candidates are in the pool—but you can control how well you prepare, follow up, and grow. Use this time to sharpen skills, research VA’s mission areas, or pursue certifications aligned with your field.

7. Visualize Your Future at the VA

Imagine the impact you’ll make once you’re part of the VA team. Visualizing a successful outcome can help you stay focused, especially when the process feels long.
