VA gynecologists provide leading care for women Veterans

A female gynecologist walks down a hallway with another woman, deep in conversation.

At VA, we’re dedicated to providing health care to meet the needs of all Veterans, including women Veterans. As a VA gynecologist, you can help us offer that vital service.

Right now, women are the fastest-growing group of Veterans in the United States and represent a diverse range of individuals. Women Veterans are professionals, mothers, and retirees spanning different ages, racial backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, and sexual orientations.

To help us meet their unique needs, gynecologists provide reproductive and sexual health services that include pelvic exams, Pap tests, cancer screenings, and testing and treatment for infections. They also diagnose and treat reproductive system disorders such as endometriosis, infertility, ovarian cysts, and pelvic pain.

VA gynecologists provide this care in a variety of environments. Many Veteran patients are treated in our main medical centers or, for aging Veterans, Community Living Centers. VA has also invested in gynecology clinics, which complete general gynecologic services, including in-office and surgical management of many common conditions.

Finding what you need

At VA, we strive to offer physicians an environment that is more conducive to providing engaged care and interacting with patients. We feel it is our duty to provide Veterans with the care they need and do so at a pace that makes sense for both you and your patients.

To ensure we provide Veterans with the best care, we provide physicians, including gynecologists, with the chance to focus entirely on the medicine. Rather than dealing with insurance or pursuing authorizations from carriers that frustrate doctors who work in the private sector, VA allows doctors some freedom from the stressors that often contribute to burnout among physicians.

“VA offers the chance to practice medicine how you want,” said Dr. Nisha Mehta. “You don’t have to worry about the business of medicine, you just get to be a good doctor.”

“Have you wished that you could focus on the reason you became a doctor in the first place and spend more time with your patients?” said Holly Martz, M.D., chief of primary care at the VA Martinsburg Health Care System. “At VA, you can order the tests your patients need without having to convince an insurance company—or worrying about whether they can afford it.”

The time VA provides translates to your personal life, as well. Our physicians typically work Monday through Friday, with no on-call time, no weekends, and on average you will see 12-14 patients per day. That’s a game changer, and helps flip the script from the typical life/work balance, letting you place more emphasis on “life” rather than “work.”

“I realized I wanted something with fewer nights, fewer weekends,” Mehta shared. “Something that would still let me be a mom. Working at VA provided the lifestyle we wanted.”

Employment benefits

We strive to provide a professional, supportive environment where our patients—and gynecologists like you—can thrive. When you dedicate your day to caring for our nation’s heroes, you deserve employment benefits worth every second of your time.

With 1 active, unrestricted license, you can work at any of our more than 1,300 facilities across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and even some U.S territories. A career at VA will also give you access to:

  • Paid vacation/personal time, paid sick leave (no limit on accumulation), paid parental leave, and 11 paid federal holidays
  • Group health insurance plans, including dental, vision, and long-term care, with many premiums paid by the federal government
  • Term life insurance, with family and additional coverage options available
  • Health care and dependent care Flexible Spending Accounts
  • Liability protection that provides immunity from personal liability for damages arising from medical malpractice or negligence
  • The Federal Employees’ Retirement System (FERS): a 3-tier retirement plan composed of Social Security, FERS basic pension benefits, and the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)

Work at VA
